Why Personalised Respite Care Matters: How We Tailor Every Stay for our NDIS participants

When it comes to respite care, one need does not fit all.

Every individual has unique needs, preferences, and goals — and the care they receive should reflect that. Personalised respite care is about more than providing a safe place to stay; it’s about creating an environment where people feel valued, understood, and supported.

At Southern Light Respite, this belief is at the heart of everything we do.

We go beyond standard respite models by tailoring every stay to suit the person — from the activities they enjoy, to the way we set up their room, to the support strategies we put in place. Through thoughtful planning and genuine connection, our team ensures participants don’t just receive care, but experience moments of joy, growth, and belonging.

Participants are encouraged and supported to make choices about their respite stay. From room selection and daily activities to meal plans and even pantry requests, every detail is personalised. Always wanted to try a new activity? Or prefer familiar comforts close at hand? With SLR, participants are empowered to shape their own stay — and our tailored support plans are designed to suit each individual.

We’re not just a provider — we’re a team committed to creating supportive environments that empower participants, give families peace of mind, and showcase the true benefits of personalised respite care.

What Real Personalised Respite Care Looks Like

Let's take a closer look at an example of how our support workers at Southern Light Respite personalises a stay for one of their participants.

  • We changed the bed spread to a pink and purple one that matched one of our participant’s style and preferences.

  • An inclusive doll was placed in the room to reflect representation and familiarity.

  • We have a cupboard full of dress-up clothes, because one of our participants enjoys playful role-play with her support workers.

  • Makeup kits and nail polish were available, knowing our participant loves “girly” activities like doing nails and makeup — and taking photos to add into her personalised SLR journal. .

  • The home was stocked with their favourite arts and crafts, including beading and jewellery making.

Here’s the best part — none of this was generic. It was all tailored to individuals. That’s the heart of STA (Short-Term Accommodation) at Southern Light Respite: creating an environment where participants thrive through familiarity, fun, and meaningful connection.

We believe that every participant deserves to feel heard, valued, and in control of their respite experience. That’s why we go beyond “standard care” and create stays that reflect each person’s unique needs, preferences, and goals.

Here are just some of the ways we make this happen:

Choice and Control – From room selection, activities, and meal plans to pantry requests, participants are supported to make meaningful choices about their stay. Want to try a new activity or have a favourite snack on hand? We make it possible.

Personalised Environment – We change out puzzles, games, and magazines to match individual interests. Décor is adjusted to create a calming, age-appropriate space, and toys or items are swapped in or out depending on the participant’s preferences.

Familiar Interests – We keep a stockpile of commonly loved items and popular activities — from LEGO and Pokémon to Disney, Wiggles, or Thomas the Tank Engine — so participants can feel at home and connected to what they love.

Thoughtful Matching – We carefully consider which support workers and participants are best suited to one another. Support workers are matched based on personality, hobbies, or skill sets, and participants are only paired with others who share similar interests. We never make unsuitable matches just to fill a ratio.

Creative Communication – Every participant’s communication and record-keeping preferences are respected. Alongside shift notes, we can create photo diaries or written journals of their stay — using our photo printer and craft supplies for those who enjoy more detailed keepsakes. Families of younger or non-verbal participants find this especially reassuring.

Collaborative Sharing – With consent, we’re always happy to share updates with support coordinators or behaviour practitioners, helping track progress, celebrate achievements, and maintain continuity of care.

Because at Southern Light Respite, when we say a participant had fun, we mean it — and we’ll happily show you proof.

Why Our Respite Care Goes Further Than the Rest

At Southern Light Respite, it’s not just accommodation. It’s about emotional wellbeing, daily living support, community engagement, and joy-filled activities.

Unlike traditional models of care, personalised respite under the NDIS ensures that every detail — from meals and routines to hobbies and creative outlets — aligns with the participant’s goals and preferences.

Support plans are created during a friendly and comprehensive intake process. We ask directly about preferences while also listening for the little details that matter — like a favourite colour or snack. These insights help us tailor each stay, whether it’s adding a purple bedspread or popping a KitKat in the shopping. It’s the small touches that make participants feel truly heard and valued.

This makes respite a powerful tool not only for daily support but also for building skills, confidence, and independence.

The Benefits of Personalised Respite Care for Participants

Why does personalisation for our participants matter?
Because the benefits of respite care go far beyond giving someone a place to stay.

Personalised respite care helps participants:

  • Build confidence by exploring activities they genuinely enjoy.

  • Improve social and life skills in safe, encouraging settings.

  • Feel calm and secure in an environment that reflects their individuality.

And the effects of respite care are long-lasting — participants return home more regulated, engaged, and connected, which positively impacts their overall wellbeing.

Carer’s Need for Respite: Supporting the Whole Family

But let’s not forget one important piece of the puzzle — carers.

The carer’s need for respite is just as vital as the participant’s. When carers see their loved one thriving in a safe and joyful space, it provides peace of mind and relief.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Families can take time to rest, recharge, or manage other responsibilities.

  • Carers feel reassured knowing their loved one is engaged in meaningful, personalised activities.

  • The whole family benefits from stronger relationships and reduced stress.

  • Families and carers feel at ease knowing their loved one is comfortable in a warm, homely environment that truly understands and supports their needs and preferences.

  • Most importantly, they can leave their loved one with Southern Light Respite confidence that they are valued, respected, and cared for with genuine compassion.
